Dean’s Message
The
Universidad del Turabo was founded in the liberal arts tradition. The Humanities and Social Sciences departments, which were once separate academic units, now join their respective faculty and programs to form the
School of Social and Human Sciences. In keeping with this tradition, the Schools’ faculty and administration recognize that in order to facilitate the students' goals, the School's management and operating style must be mission driven, sensitive, unusually supportive, collegial and enthusiastic. Our primary mission is to provide an environment for learning and personal growth in which students can develop a sense of responsibility and independence in both thought and expression.
The School undertakes this mission in a coeducational setting where excellence in teaching and learning are encouraged in the classroom, in practical internships, and in strong relationships with community projects at large.
Though rooted in the Liberal Arts tradition, the School offers diverse professional and academic majors and graduate
programs. Graduates of SSHS emerge with the confidence to be productive and to confront the critical issues of our day. Because of the strong liberal arts base, the curriculum at the School is balanced between the Humanities, the Social Sciences and the professions. Graduates are not only competent in their chosen field, but also have the diversity of experience needed to understand and appreciate the contributions of other disciplines. Equally important, our students graduate with the ability to express themselves in an articulate fashion. They are able to analyze problems and develop solutions. They have an understanding of the human condition, which allows them to view the world with compassion and make responsible decisions. The
School of Social and Human Sciences is constantly seeking new ways to help the entire university community reach these goals.
Welcome to our School Website. I am delighted that you have an interest in learning more about our institution. I invite you to join us. As a graduate, you will always be a part of the
School of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidad del
Turabo.
