Dr. Irina Petrovska of Macedonia
Visiting Fulbright Scholar from University St. Kliment Ohridski-Bitola, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, Ohrid
The Universidad del Este (UNE), of the Ana G. Méndez University System, welcomes Dr. Irina Petrovska, Visiting Fulbright Scholar from the University St. Kliment Ohridski-Bitola, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, Ohrid, Macedonia, to visit its Carolina Campus on December 7th & 8th of 2010.

Dr. Petrovska is a proven authority in the field of English as a Second Language and is an expert in the field of Inter-Cultural Communication in Tourism and Hospitality. She earned a Ph.D. in Philology in 2005, a Master of Arts degree in Sociolinguistics in 1997, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philology in 1987, all at the University Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Macedonia.

Since 2006, Dr. Petrovska has been an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality at the University St. Kliment Ohridski- Bitola, where she teaches English for Tourism and Hospitality and Business English. She has also taught in the Faculties of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies for Public Administration at her university. Dr. Petrovska’s primary field of teaching and expertise is English as a Second Language (ESL), although she also teaches linguistic courses in Phonetics, Morphology, and Syntax. At the postgraduate level, she teaches Anglo-American Civilization and Intercultural Communication in Tourism. Dr. Petrovska’s research interest is in the field of intercultural communication, and more specifically in the field of ethnography of communication.

From August 2001 to June 2002, Dr. Petrovska was a Fulbright Scholar at Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in Iowa, where she worked in the Department of International Education and conducted a research project entitled, "Cultural Mirrors in the ESL Classroom." Currently, Dr. Petrovska is completing her Fulbright Scholar in Residence semester at the College of Davidson and Davies Counties (DCCC) in Lexington, North Carolina.

During her two-day visit to the Universidad del Este, Dr. Petrovska will present three different lectures, participate in a PBS (Public Broadcast System) televised interview on “UNE-Vision” (Channel 40) and meet with UNE administrators, faculty and students. Dr. Petrovska’s lectures at UNE, all open to the public, will include:

“Inter-Cultural Communication in Hospitality and Tourism: Specialized Discourse”

The main objective of this lecture is to analyze and describe commonly used speech in tourism in English and Macedonian. The lecture will underscore principles of the cultural considerations of communication in order to evaluate similarities and differences in the tourist communication and to highlight cultural aspects of the languages within the global language classroom.

“The Forgotten Gem: Promoting Cultural Heritage and Tradition of the Republic of Macedonia

The lecture offers a journey through photography – the audience will be introduced to the beauty of a forgotten gem on the Balkans, its cultural heritage and tradition, its promotion being closely related to the significance of the knowledge of foreign languages, which is the most important assumption for communication in the tourism industry and where human resources represent an agent of the uttermost importance.
