Practicums & Experiences
The Practicum Placement office and its staff work with the Jose A. (Tony) Santana International School of Hospitality & Culinary Arts students to provide them with life experiences in the hospitality and culinary arts fields. These experiences include practicum courses, job opportunities, internships, exchanges and others like the Learning Skills for Life program.
A practicum is a course of study designed for students that involves the supervised practical application of previously studied theory. It focuses on work experience in a pre-approved hospitality or culinary operation, supervised by experienced professionals. It requires the application of previously learned theory to real life situations. These professional experiences open the door to future opportunities and to a great deal of networking. There are a number of courses that need to be approved before enrolling in the practicum; this is why most practicums are during the last year of your course of study. During the first years there are many things you can do to prepare yourself and to benefit the most. There are many opportunities for local placement and we also have approved centers in the United States and International locations such as Italy, Spain, Mexico, Finland and Peru. These opportunities usually require a longer planning process so; it is advised that you visit the professional development office at the earliest convenience to discuss opportunities and your goals.
At the beginning of every semester all students enrolled in the course are required to attend a full day seminar where they learned about different topics to prepare you for the experience. The practicum is a 3 credit course and it can only be approved with an A or B grade.
Our School along with the International Affairs office works closely to help provide our students with opportunities to have different work/practicum experiences outside Puerto Rico and also student academic exchanges with other Universities around the world such as the Haga Heelia University in Finland.
Among some of the recent practicum opportunities our School has been working to provide our students are a three month practicum at the âRestaurante Papricaâ in Lugo, Spain and a three month practicum at the âInstituto de Arte Culinarioâ and Zeppelin Restaurant in Orvieto, Italy. Come by our office to find more details on the different exchanges and abroad opportunities available.
