CIAC was created in 1993 with the vision of becoming the first environmental information center in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean dedicated to managing environmental information and coordinating the development of service and public awareness initiatives related to environmental issues that affect the quality of life and environment resources. CIAC’s mission is to effectively support the identification, analysis, and solution to environmental problems in the Caribbean through its informative, educational, and public awareness programs. Among CIAC’s goals:
-
Design, develop, and supervise environmental information management programs.
-
Compile, organize, store, and distribute environmental data and information on various subjects related to the Caribbean.
-
Design, develop, and supervise public awareness strategies related to environmental issues.
-
Develop multi-agency collaborative agreements for the development of environmental projects.
CIAC has two (2) components: Service and Special Projects. The Service component includes information management and the development of collections, while the Special Projects component includes: continuing education, the production of educational materials, and the identification and planning of strategies to acquire external funds to facilitate the sustainability of the Center.
