Message of the Dean

As Dean of the School of Education, I welcome your interest in a career in education.  In an era of complex social and economic changes, technological advancements, globalization trends and many other challenges of this new century, it is clear to me that knowledge provides competitive advantage.

The future growth and development of our society will be determined by the quality of human skills, capacities and values nurtured by our nation's educators.  Becoming a teacher is an extraordinary complex venture.  Some of what is needed for success is learned; some is attributable to who you are as an individual.  As you will see, in our School we argue for the art and science of teaching.

For 28 years, Universidad del Turabo's education programs have focused on developing well-educated and well-trained teachers, administrators and other education professionals for service in private and public schools in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the United States.  We offer a rich and comprehensive set of degree programs designed to prepare professionals for leadership positions in education, from pre-school through higher education and in non-school settings as well.

The essence of our School is its people, from faculty and staff, to students and alumni, the intense commitment and great sense of pride and responsibility in our role as educators is indicative of the true spirit of the School of Education.

A spirit that is characterized by:

The value of teamwork and cooperation.
A strong belief in the value of individual effort.
A proactive attitude towards change and the improvement of education
An educational process that occurs in and out of the classroom
Close connections to schools
Integration of theory and practice
The courage to cast aside old assumptions and paradigms and the willingness to consider new perspectives.
