The history of teacher education at Universidad del Turabo reveals a dynamic process of growth and evolution.  Academic offerings in education started in 1972, when the institution was founded.  The first program was a bachelor degree in elementary Education.

In the past twenty-eight years, what was originally the Department of Education has evolved to become the School of Education.  The School includes three academic departments: 1) The Department of Education, 2) The Physical Education Department and the Graduate Program. It also includes the Center for Research and Development (IDEA).

The School is also responsible for the administration of the Sports Complex and CAMP TURABO, a summer camp for children from 6 to 12 years old.

The Department of Physical Education administers the Sports Facilities of the institution.  The academic offerings of this division, as well as sports and recreational activities have the following facilities available:

400 meters synthetical track
3 tennis courts
Softball field
25 meters swimming pool
Jogging trail
Training room
Bathrooms and dressing rooms
Basketball and volleyball courts
Gymnasium
A Wellness Center is being developed for the use of the internal and external communities.  It will include components in sports medicine, clinical evaluation and cardiovascular development.

For more than a decade, the Physical Education program has developed one of the strongest athletic teams in Puerto Rico: TAINOS del TURABO .  The TAINOS have won 10 championships at the Annual Interuniversities Athletic Competitions.

The School of Educations currently serves nearly 1,500 students who are engaged in preparation or professional development as teachers, administrators, counselors and librarians.
