Since the creation of Puerto Rico Junior College in 1949, the creative vision of Ana G. Méndez hasn't ceased. Relentless in her search for economic resources, Ms. Ana always wanted the best for her "childrens" and the institutions that developed over the years. During 1974, the year that she retired, she recommended the establishment of a scholarship and financial assistance fund for students, which became the Ana G. Méndez Educational Foundation.
Therefore a Permanent Fund was not foreign to the University System's philosophy. On the contrary -- the cornerstone of the Ana. G. Méndez University System had always been to help students with financial needs, giving them an opportunity to study with the best resources at their disposition.
Twenty years later, this dream became a reality. Under the leadership of José F. Méndez, a loyal defender of Puerto Rico's youth, an example was set in Puerto Rico in 1994 with the creation of the first permanent scholarship fund at a local university: the Forgers of the Ana G. Méndez University System's Future program.
Hand in hand, day by day, a group of visionaries accepted the challenge go to door to door and ask for the unconditional support of friends to achieve this heroic feat.
The Permanent Scholarship fund was not only immediately embraced by the corporate and philanthropic community, but also received the support of a group of individuals who disinterestedly put together a campaign that collected $4 million in five years and succeeded in establishing 39 grants during the first fundraising campaign from 1994 - 1999.
