The Compliance Office is in charge of all processes aimed at ensuring compliance with federal and local laws that govern scientific procedures in research and academic activities. The Compliance Office monitors and regulates human participation, use of live or dead animals and proper handling of chemical substances or hazardous materials and DNA in research activities, in addition to all academic studies through all SUAGM institutions. Regulatory Committees are composed of members who represent most academic disciplines available at SUAGM’s three institutions, as well as community members, as mandated by law.

Compliance Office

The Compliance Office’s main responsibilities and duties are classified in four areas:

Guidance

  • Advise professors regarding the importance of complying with established norms and procedures in a responsible and ethical manner in all scientific and educational research conducted at SUAGM.

  • Provide advice on any non-compliance reports.

  • Coordinate all chemical and biological materials handling with the Occupational Health and Safety Office.

  • Make sure that all scientific research collaborations between SUAGM and other institutions comply with established norms and regulations.

Supervision

  • Make sure that all established norms and procedures are in place to comply with federal and local laws that regulate scientific and educational research activities.

  • Evaluate the impact of laws and regulations that govern scientific research that is conducted, coordinated or sponsored by SUAGM.

  • Make sure that all norms regulating scientific research at SUAGM are followed.

  • Participate in facility inspections to make sure they comply with laws and norms that regulate scientific and educational research.

  • Participate in Regulatory Committees’ meetings as advisors and clarify compliance concerns.

Communication, Education and Certification

  • Establish and maintain an effective communication with federal and state agencies that stipulate the laws and norms that regulate scientific and educational research sponsored by SUAGM.

  • Keep the university and scientific community informed regarding current laws that regulate scientific research.

  • Design and coordinate compliance workshops for the university community.

  • Offer certification workshops required by law and approved in advance by Regulatory Committees.

Administration

  • Develop and update assurances with research-related regulating agencies.

  • Design forms and documents to comply with scientific research.

  • Organize and store documents and files pertaining to Regulatory Committees’ activities and duties.

  • Assist Regulatory Committees in developing their procedures, guidelines, reports and files.

  • Provide administrative and clerical support to Research Compliance Committees.

  • Provide assistance in external and internal audits that evaluate the Office’s processes.

  • Develop instruments to compile regulated information.

  • Implement and supervise norms established by the different Committees.

Permanent Regulatory Committees

  • Human Beings Protection Board (IRB) - research related to human beings.

  • Bio-Safety Committee (IBC) - research that uses bio-hazardous materials.

  • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) - animal care, use and management.

Alternate Committees (ADHOC)

  • Conflicts of Interests.

  • Responsible Research Behavior.
